Bobbi Bailin
Bobbi Bailin has been working as an independent artist since the late 1960’s.
She currently creates in her studio in Falmouth, MA using mixed media for 2 and 3 dimensional work of art.
Her early art career began with fabric design and batik, when she first explored using the techniques to push the boundaries between craft and fine art. Her work evolved from fabric to paper which she used to translate the traditional craft of quilt making into works behind glass. The latest evolution of her work involves a mixed-media layering of the soft edges of handmade paper, paint and pressed plants.
Bobbi has taken art classes at Douglas College in New Brunswick, NJ, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence, France, the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA.
Bobbi has taught art classes and workshops at the Boston and Cambridge Centers for Adult Education in MA, the Cataumet Arts Center in MA, the Cape Cod Conservatory in MA, the Noyes School of Rhythm in CT, and other centers.
Her works have been shown in the US and Canada. On Cape Cod her works have been exhibited at the Spectrum Gallery in Brewster, the West Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, the Cataumet Arts Center, the Falmouth Artist Guild, the Guyer Barn in Hyannis and others. She has shown work on Newbury Street in Boston, Mosaic Gallery in New Bedford, Handworks Gallery of American Crafts in Acton, MA and currently at Artworks! in New Bedford, MA.
In addition to being an artist, Bobbi Bailin maintains a private practice in the Alexander Technique and teaches movement and dance.
Artist's Statement
My collages are composed of handmade paper, paint, and bits of nature. Handmade papers have interesting textures and translucent qualities that allow me to create depth and light. I “paint” with the papers by applying them in layers, and I use paint (watercolor and acrylics) and oil pastel as my foundation and for highlights. For more texture and interest, I include plants, like grasses, leaves and seaweed, that I have gathered along the shore and in the woods. I dry and press the plants and add them as part of the paper or as another layer of the collage.
I am inspired by the natural beauty around me, and I love the qualities of light where the sand, sea, and sky meet. Many of my pieces tend to look like seascapes, but I am not so much attempting to recreate a scene as I am responding to the feelings of peace and power at the edge of the sea. I like the challenge of painting with papers which have a soft edge and cannot be as easily controlled as paint. I also feel that using actual plants adds more harmony and direct connection with Nature.
